About Salcedo

Salcedo is the capital of the Hermanas Mirabal Province, which is located in the fertile Cibao Region, in the  North of the Dominican Republic.  

 

The "Mirabal Sisters" Province is one of the smallest ones in the Country. it is also formed by other 2 Municipalities, Villa Tapia and Tenares.

 

The province was first known as "Juana Nuñez", which was the name of the owner of big  lots of land  in the area in the times of the colony. In  1891 its name was changed to Salcedo, in honor of Indepence Hero General Francisco Antonio Salcedo, and finally, in 2007, the province was named after The Mirabal Sisters, 3 heroines who lost their lives fighting against the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, one of the cruelest dictators in Latin America, who ruled the country for 30 years.

 

Due to weather conditions and fertile lands, the main economical activity in the province  is agriculture. Being Plantains, Coffee, cacao beans, different types of yams and roots.
